Beginning in 1967, archaeological work was carried out in the reser-
voir areas of the Keban, Karakaya and Atatürk Dams ( which were
to be built on the Euphrates within the scope of the Southeast
Anatolia Project ) and discoveries important enough to change the
history of civilization were made. In the basin forming the reser-
voir of the Birecik Dam (under construction since 1996 ), it has
proved impossible to carry out essential research and salvage work.
The area has been left to the destruction of the dam's waters without documenting valuable archaeological remains - such as those
found at Belkıs / Zeugma - and without assessing other remains to
determine where they fit in terms of the civil architecture peculiar to
the area and its urban and rural fabric. In the same manner, the
region's flora and fauna, which are part of our natural heritage, are
being destroyed without being documented. And even worse, fol-
lowing the completion of the Birecik and Kargamış Dams, the 'river
of paradise'- With its basin in which civilization was born-will no
longer flow this century within Turkey's borders.
