Saffet Emre Tonguç ve Pat Yale, 2007'de bugüne kadar yazılmış en kapsamlı, en güncel ve en zengin görsel içeriğe sahip İstanbul kitabını yazmak üzere yola çıktılar ve bir senede biteceğini sandıkları bu macera tam tamına üç sene sürdü. Şehirde bazen yürüyerek, bazen değişik araçları kullanarak 15.600 km. yol kateden ikilinin kendi çektikleri fotoğraflara 60'tan fazla fotoğrafçı katkıda bulundu. 650 sayfalık kitapta 3.000 fotoğraf, illüstrasyon, harita, gravür, minyatür ve tarihi fotoğraf kullandılar. Tarihi ve turistik mekanlar dışında şehirdeki restoran, kafe, bar, dükkan, otel, hostel, gece kulübü ve hamam gibi 2.000'e yakın mekanı ziyaret edip görüşlerini satırlara aktardılar. Gebze'den Ağva'ya şehirde ayak basmadıkları yer kalmadı. İstanbul hakkında hazırlanmış en kapsamlı, en güncel, en zengin rehber olan bu kitap mutlaka elinizin altında, evinizin bir köşesinde, arabanızın torpidosunda, kitaplığınızda ve kesinlikle arşivinizde yerini almalı.

Together they explored Cerrahpasa, the Kadınlar Pazarı and the back streets of Balat.

Most guidebooks for Turks are written by Turks while those for foreigners are written by foreigners. This rare collaborative effort brings together the insider knowledge of a life - long Istanbul resident and the outsider curiosity of a frequent visitor. Says Pat: "Most visitors to Turkey and that includes guidebook writers can't read Turkish which means that they can't access all the information available. By working together Saffet and I were able to explore many different sources in both our languages, and come up with a text which is equally well written in both languages."
